Sam was born and raised in Orem, Utah where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Brigham Young University. He later earned his master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from Northwestern University in Chicago and is currently earning a PhD in psychology at BYU. His research interests at BYU focus on critical analysis of the philosophical assumptions and implications of historical and contemporary theories in psychology and psychotherapy. Additionally, he has worked as an LMFT in Utah since 2018 and currently works at the Center for Couples and Families. He primarily specializes in treating people struggling with compulsive pornography use, and also works with adolescent males with behavioral disorders, life-coaching for young adults, newlywed couples, and adults struggling with spiritual identity crises. His work in therapy leans heavily on his training in philosophical psychology, offering a unique existential approach to therapy. He is the author of several entries in the Encyclopedia of Couple and Family Therapy and has presented on the topics of compulsive pornography use, Integrative Systemic Therapy, digital safety for kids, and working in the mental health field in communities throughout Utah.
