About AMCAP: General Information About the Associations and Its Members 

Welcome to AMCAP 

The Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists began in the 1970's as a small group of LDS mental health professionals who would share informal reunions at professional conferences. They found a need to more formally incorporate themselves into a professional organization that could acknowledge their spirituality in the context of their professional training and experience. Since then, AMCAP has grown into an international organization whose members share adherence to the principles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

AMCAP has always recognized the centrality of religion in the human experience. It continues its role to foster research, training, and professional development that ethically integrates spirituality in the helping process. We welcome you to join with us in this exciting endeavor.

What Is AMCAP?

AMCAP is a nonprofit organization run by its members, for its members. Founded in 1975, AMCAP has grown into an international organization with representation in many countries around the world. Members of AMCAP are a vital group, offering one another support and collegiality while demonstrating the effectiveness of value-centered therapy.

What Is the Purpose of AMCAP?

With an eye single to the glory of God and centered in Christ, AMCAP strives to promote spiritual and professional excellence consistent with Gospel principles. AMCAP provides a forum for mental health professionals, whose common bond is adherence to the principles and standards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, promoting fellowship, fostering communication, and facilitating collaboration among LDS professionals.

AMCAP encourages and supports the efforts of members to promote within AMCAP and other community organizations the identification, generation, and adoption of moral standards, conceptual frameworks, models, theories, therapeutic methodologies, and research activities that meet professional and Church standards.

AMCAP members are willing to declare their commitment to the principles and standards of the Church in their personal and professional practice, and adhere to the ethical standards of their respective professions and the Church.

What Professions Are Included in AMCAP?

AMCAP members include, but are not limited to: Clinical Psychologists, Social Workers, Military Clergy, Vocational Counselors, Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Counselors, Educational Psychologists, Counseling Psychologists, Paraprofessionals, Psychiatrists, Nurses, Marriage and Family Therapists, Experimental and Research Psychologists, Social Psychologists, Students, Lay Counselors, Attorneys and Educators.

How Can I Benefit from Membership in AMCAP?

Conventions:

Twice a year AMCAP members convene in Salt Lake City, Utah, for a two-day convention. Speakers include Church leaders, guest presenters, AMCAP members and General Authorities. Conventions provide training, research findings, innovative treatment efforts, and multi-disciplinary presentations at the intersection of human sciences and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Continuing education hours are issued for most disciplines.

Publications:

JOURNAL: All members receive the AMCAP Journal, which contains reports of convention presentations, articles reflecting the research and theories of AMCAP members and guest writers, and other features of interest to AMCAP members.

AMCAP NETWORKER: These publications keep members informed of recent developments and up-coming events.

TAPES: Members may purchase tapes of most convention speakers at a discount.

WEBSITE: AMCAP Members have full access to AMCAP's official website, www.amcap.net. Features on this site include an updated member directory, tape order information, journal articles, and conference information.

What If I Am Located Outside of Utah?

Local chapters of AMCAP are organized in many locations throughout the world. Area coordinators help organize activities on the local level and communicate members needs and concerns to the Governing Board. Chapters meet to promote fellowship and facilitate collaboration among LDS professionals in pursuit of mutual interests.

How Can I Network with AMCAP Members?

A printed membership directory is published every three years identifying LDS professionals, with their specialties, throughout the world. Updated directory information and bulletin board features are provided in a password-protected members-only section of the AMCAP website.

How Can Students Benefit?

AMCAP makes a special effort to involve students, incorporating a spiritual dimension into their professional training. Students become AMCAP members and attend conventions at reduced rates. Like professional members, they are eligible to vote, hold office, may contribute to convention presentations, and contribute to AMCAP publications.
