About AMCAP: General Information About the Associations and Its Members Welcome to AMCAP The Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists began in the 1970's as a small group of LDS mental health professionals who would share informal reunions at professional conferences. They found a need to more formally incorporate themselves into a professional organization that could acknowledge their spirituality in the context of their professional training and experience. Since then, AMCAP has grown into an international organization whose members share adherence to the principles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. What Is AMCAP? AMCAP is a nonprofit organization run by its members, for its members. Founded in 1975, AMCAP has grown into an international organization with representation in many countries around the world. Members of AMCAP are a vital group, offering one another support and collegiality while demonstrating the effectiveness of value-centered therapy. What Is the Purpose of AMCAP? With an eye single to the glory of God and centered in Christ, AMCAP strives to promote spiritual and professional excellence consistent with Gospel principles. AMCAP provides a forum for mental health professionals, whose common bond is adherence to the principles and standards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, promoting fellowship, fostering communication, and facilitating collaboration among LDS professionals. What Professions Are Included in AMCAP? AMCAP members include, but are not limited to: Clinical Psychologists, Social Workers, Military Clergy, Vocational Counselors, Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Counselors, Educational Psychologists, Counseling Psychologists, Paraprofessionals, Psychiatrists, Nurses, Marriage and Family Therapists, Experimental and Research Psychologists, Social Psychologists, Students, Lay Counselors, Attorneys and Educators. How Can I Benefit from Membership in AMCAP? Conventions: What If I Am Located Outside of Utah? Local chapters of AMCAP are organized in many locations throughout the world. Area coordinators help organize activities on the local level and communicate members needs and concerns to the Governing Board. Chapters meet to promote fellowship and facilitate collaboration among LDS professionals in pursuit of mutual interests. How Can I Network with AMCAP Members? A printed membership directory is published every three years identifying LDS professionals, with their specialties, throughout the world. Updated directory information and bulletin board features are provided in a password-protected members-only section of the AMCAP website. How Can Students Benefit? AMCAP makes a special effort to involve students, incorporating a spiritual dimension into their professional training. Students become AMCAP members and attend conventions at reduced rates. Like professional members, they are eligible to vote, hold office, may contribute to convention presentations, and contribute to AMCAP publications. How Can I Contact the AMCAP Office?
